Michigan Lawmakers Examine Changes in Care at ManorCare

After the Carlyle Group was criticized for failing to attend a hearing on private equity ownership of nursing homes, ManorCare’s care record took center stage. Lawmakers examined the difference in the number of patient care violations at some ManorCare homes before and after the Carlyle buyout and pressed ManorCare executives to explain the homes’ care record.

SEIU’s research shows that ManorCare facilities continue to rack up violations of patient care standards under Carlyle’s ownership. At one facility, Heartland Health Care of Jackson, the number of violated standards increased from 5 to 18 during the most recent regular survey inspection -- a 260% jump.

The hearing comes as Michigan lawmakers look to move legislation that would tighten the process of nursing home license transfers and address some of the transparency and accountability issues raised during the consideration of the Carlyle ManorCare buyout.
