Impact of Buyouts on Nursing Homes

The September 23rd edition of The New York Times published an article by reporter Charles Duhigg investigating the effects of corporate takeovers on the nursing home industry. He speaks to both private equity investors, families with relatives in privately-owned homes, and to experts in nursing homes and the aging.

Featured in the article is UC San Francisco professor Charlene Harrington, who says the first thing buyout corporations do is “lay off nurses and other staff that are essential to keeping patients safe.”
