• Violations on the rise: Under federal law, nursing homes are required to be inspected every 9 to 15 months. During the three most recent survey cycles, the four New Jersey ManorCare homes for which data were available were cited for a total of 62 federal health standards violations, including failure to make sure the nursing home was free of dangers that might cause accidents, and failure to prevent or properly treat bedsores.
  
  
• Inadequate staffing: In a 2001 study prepared for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, experts identified a staffing threshold below which quality of care was compromised. Staffing at the four ManorCare nursing homes in New Jersey that reported staffing levels fails to meet that standard.
