Violations of federal health standards: Under federal law, nursing homes are required to be inspected every nine to 15 months. During the three most recent survey cycles, ManorCare’s Washington homes were cited for a total of 81 federal health standards violations, including failure to meet the nutrition needs of all residents and failure to make sure residents are safe from serious medication errors.

Nationally, violations at ManorCare homes are on the rise: Citations for federal health standards violations at Manor Care nursing homes nationwide have increased nearly 30 percent over the past three inspection cycles.

Inadequate staffing: In a 2001 study prepared for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, experts identified a staffing threshold below which quality of care was compromised. Staffing at all four ManorCare nursing homes in Washington fails to meet that threshold.
